Seminar “Sahara. Memoria de una descolonización inconclusa” at the Seville University

A seminar on decolonization in Western Sahara hosted by the University of Seville, Spain

This seminar will feature six social sciences researchers who will provide a better understanding of how and why Western Sahara’s decolonization process failed but also on the current consequences of the occupation. On Wednesday 15th of October, the Inauguration will start at 17.15 in the Aula Carriazo of the Geography and History Faculty. Carlos Ruiz Miguel (USC) will then proceed to talk about the historical relationship between Spain and Western Sahara (“El Sahara Occidental y España: Historia, Política y Derecho”) at 17.30. Then, in the Ateneo of Seville (Excmo) at 19.30, journalist Laura Casielles will hold a conference on her book Arena en los ojos. Memoria y silencio de la colonización española de Marruecos y el Sáhara Occidental (2024).

The second day will then begin at 10.00 in the Aula Carriazo with an intervention by José Ignacio Algueró Cuervo (UNED) on Western Sahara’s geographical context and the consequences of the decolonization process’ failure (“Sahara Occidental: marco geográfico y responsables y consecuencias de una descolonización fallida”). At 12.00, Mario Linares Díaz (UCM) will then analyse how fear and chaos had an impact on Sahrawi memory (“Unos la dejaron y otros la ocuparon, ¡aquello ocurrió así! Abandono, caos y miedo en la memoria saharaui”). At 17.30, José Luis Rodríguez (URJC) will hold a conference untitled : “MAE-Presidencia: Dos enfoques contrapuestos de la descolonización del Sahara” and will be followed by an intervention on natural resources by Victoria Veguilla del Moral (UPO) at 19.00 (“La explotación de los recursos naturales en el proyecto colonial y de ocupación del Sahara Occidental”).
