What does it mean to investigate the history of Western Sahara from within Sahrawi refugee camps and the Algerian institutions that have accompanied its internationalisation?

Drawing on two periods of fieldwork conducted in 2025 in Tindouf and Algiers, this article examines the conditions of access to archives, encounters with former members of the Polisario Front and figures from Algerian diplomacy, as well as the historiographical questions raised by the research. It explores the formation of Sahrawi diplomacy, transnational activist networks and the methodological challenges of conducting research in close proximity to its subject.
