This seminar deals with the role of Spain in the eurption and pursuit of the Western Sahara conflict. In 1976, Spain – former colonial power in Western Sahara – wished to give up on its responsabilities of administrative power given by the UN in the context of the decolonization process. According to Hans Corell, former Assistant General Secretary of legal affairs at the UN, Spain could not have legally and unilaterally given it up. Many legal experts consider that the country remains the administrative power in charge with accompanying Western Sahara during its decolonization process. Throughout the several decades that have marked the conflict, the decisions and actions taken by Spain have had major consequences on its proceedings. In this seminar, IsaÍas Barreñada Bajo offers an in-depth presentation of these consequences, providing understandable explanations. This video is a replay of a live intervention for the humanitarian organization Solidarity Rising.
