The 15 students were arrested in early 2016. They were all mistreated and tortured by the Moroccan police during their interrogations. Many went on hunger strike to protest against this mistreatment and the lack of a proper investigation into the death of a Moroccan civilian during one of their peaceful demonstrations. Their trial in the court of first instance was postponed 12 times, meaning that most of them remained in detention without trial for 501 days, well beyond what is permitted under Moroccan law. The 13 February 2018 hearing of their appeal trial was notable for the fact that their families were prevented from attending (except for the last few minutes), despite the public nature of these hearings. The appeal trial was postponed until 13 March 2018 at the request of three Sahrawi lawyers who will now defend the students.
